Sleepy Hollow honors officer with promotion

SLEEPY HOLLOW — A number of area police officers attended the village board meeting this week to celebrate the promotion of Sleepy Hollow police Cpl. Sue Wilson to the rank of sergeant.

The board approved the promotion in May, but the official swearing-in ceremony was kept under wraps until Monday night.

"I was really surprised," Wilson said.

Wilson's father, mother, stepfather and brother attended the ceremony along with her three children — Tom, John and Desiree — and her three grandchildren, Abby, Javin and Nevaeh.

The entire Sleepy Hollow force was joined by Gilberts Police Chief Mike Joswick and Sgt. Jack Rood, West Dundee Police Chief Ed Dennis, and East Dundee Officer Sharon Kendall.

Wilson has worked for the Sleepy Hollow Police Department for the past 12 years. She was promoted to corporal six years ago.

"We're lucky to have her," said Sleepy Hollow Police Chief James Montalbano. "She's done every job that's come along. She brings something special to her work."

Wilson has handled a range of assignments, from sexual assaults to sudden death. She has served on the major crimes task force and started a peer jury program that deals with teenage offenders who have committed nonviolent crimes.

She also was in charge of the "Kid Kar" project that turned a retired police car into a public relations vehicle to be used at Drug Abuse Resistance Education meetings and other special events.

Officer's promotion comes with party

Sleepy Hollow Chief Jim Montalbano knows how to dole out promotions with style. Just ask newly named Sgt. Sue Wilson - the first female to achieve that rank in the village and one of the few so named throughout the northern Fox Valley.

She was at first a bit puzzled when the chief recently called her to village hall to help with an unruly woman in the village board room. As the then-corporal peppered him with questions, a mysteriously mum chief just urged her toward the "scene" where friends, family and fellow officers from Sleepy Hollow, East Dundee, West Dundee and Gilberts were waiting.

Far from encountering an unruly female prisoner, Sue walked into a celebration.

Better still, the chief also made sure her three children, grandchildren, mom, stepfather, brother and even her dad, former Carpentersville Fire Chief Ron Creek, were in the welcoming crowd.

"That in itself made it," said Sue, who still is a bit flabbergasted at the surprise. "I was shocked, really, really shocked," she said with a laugh.

A bit uncomfortable with the limelight, the soft-spoken officer said both the promotion and the surprise meant a lot.

"She deserved it," the chief said, acknowledging there may have been just a hint of payback for Wilson's role in surprising him on his 30th anniversary in police work.

"We surprised him pretty good," the new sergeant said, recalling they brought in all the officers who had once worked for the chief.

Now it's back to serious duty with the chief saying there would be little transition because Sue was already doing the job. In fact, he said, she's been doing a lot of jobs. She handles juvenile cases, investigations, field training, evidence, acts as the liaison to the state's attorney's office and, when the chief is out, steps into his shoes.

"That's why he's not allowed to leave very often," she said.

The new sergeant said it's not hard being the only woman on the force. Sleepy Hollow's police department has "a good group of guys. We work as a team and we help each other." And, apparently, know how to pull off a surprise or two.
